Mothers have to deal with a lot of problems while raising their babies. One of the most common problems is diaper rashes and almost every mother has had to try and find a solution for it. Many more mothers will face this problem because this is something that comes, almost inevitably, with the use of diapers. Diaper rashes are common conditions in babies, where they develop sore, red and tender skins.
Let us understand some of the common causes for diaper rashes and some simple solutions to get rid of them.
Diaper Material - The diaper material is one of the basic and most common reasons for babies getting rashes. This happens when the material does not suit the baby and its sensitive skin reacts to it. The skin will become red on getting in contact with synthetic fabrics or fleece and mink materials on the inside. Babies also develop rashes due to waterproof PUL or latex elastics that make the skin near the leg creases red.
Solution- Go for diapers made of natural fabric. Find diapers made of organic cotton, bamboo or hemp. You can use a PUL or wool cover over the diaper to avoid leakage. For those babies who are sensitive to latex elastics, you can also find diapers from brands that produce them with latex-free elastics.
Size and Fit -
The fit of the diaper can also affect the baby skin. If you notice redness on the belly or thighs, it might be because of a poor fit (either tight or loose). If there is chafing because of a poor fit then it can make babies uncomfortable making their skin red and appear rash-like.
Solution- You should get the right fit of the type of diapers you are using. The elastic should exactly fit the thighs just like an underwear to avoid rashes. It should be snug around the waist and the legs so that your baby is comfortable wearing the diapers.
Some babies might be sensitive to the wetness of the diapers. This can happen mostly when the baby is wearing natural fabric diapers like those made of cotton, bamboo or hemp. This is because the materials remain wet as there is no layer to absorb and to wick away the liquid. If the baby's skin remains exposed to the wetness, then there is a bigger chance of rashes developing. This happens mostly during the night time when mothers or parents do not change the diapers as frequently as during the daytime.
Solution- The baby should be given more diaper-free time so that the rashes are cured and the skin becomes healthy again. You can also switch to a diaper that has a built-in wicking layer, or put in an extra stay-dry layer in between the diaper and the baby skin in case you plan to continue using a cloth diaper. Use cloth-safe moisture barrier cream or lanolin for over a fortnight to help the skin recover. You can also try using corn-starch, like a powder to coat the skin affected by rash to help it stay dry.
Ammonia Burn -
Some brands of soaps and detergents might not be able to get rid of ammonia from soiled diapers. If you are not washing your baby's bum or the diapers properly, then it might leave ammonia residues. This is actually a serious thing as the ammonia will leave the skin blistered and red, more than in other types of rashes. It is really important to make sure you take proper precautions before it actually deteriorates.
Solution- Do not use the diapers until the baby recovers from the burn. Change your soap/detergent brand immediately and get rid of anything that even has a hint of ammonia. You can use products like Funk Rock to combat the ammonia problem. Also plan your wash properly, and use enough and better detergents to get rid of all the ammonia and keep the baby diapers clean.
Better Cleaning -
Not cleaning the diapers properly can also cause rashes. If you notice that the diapers still smell weird after you wash them or right after the baby pees in them, then understand that you are not cleaning them well enough. The smell is a result of bacteria or residue left in the diapers that can cause rashes in the warm and moist diaper environment.
Solution- Clean the baby diapers and clean them properly. Make sure you use adequate detergent, especially when the water is hard.
